How I Got Here

I used to think curiosity was just a personality trait. Now I think mine has an origin story.

I was adopted as a baby, which meant that from a young age, I was quietly running my own experiment: who am I because of how I was raised and who am I because of where I started? I didn’t have language for “nature vs nurture” as a kid - I just knew I was endlessly curious about people, about why we turn out the way we do, and about how much of that is actually still up to us.

That question followed me into a psychology PhD, and eventually into a dissertation on growth mindset - the reserach on why some people, faced with the exact same starting point, end up believing they can grow and change, while others don’t. I didn’t pick that topic by accident. I’d been living it my whole life.

It’s the same lens I bring into therapy. I don’t think where you started is the whole story. I think it’s the starting point of a story you still get real say in - and Im genuinely, professionally curious about what that looks like for you.

That’s a lot of what “Beautifully Unfinished” means to me. None of us are done. Some of the most interesting people I know - including, most days, me - are still very much in progress.
